Tone2 Nemesis Gets a Sound Engine Overhaul in Free v3.1 Update

Tone2 Nemesis Gets a Sound Engine Overhaul in Free v3.1 Update

Quick Summary

Tone2 Audio has released Nemesis 3.1, a free engine update to its NeoFM synthesizer plugin for Windows and Mac. The update delivers up to 20dB of aliasing reduction at higher sample rates, improved micro-tuning for chords, and a full overhaul of seven built-in reverb processors. If you use Nemesis for leads, plucks or pads in drum and bass or dubstep, existing projects will automatically benefit from the improved sound quality on reload.

Tone2 Nemesis 3 — the NeoFM synthesizer plugin, now updated to v3.1 with a significantly improved sound engine.

Tone2 pushed Nemesis 3.1 on 3 April 2026 — a focused engine update rather than a feature drop, and the better for it. The headline change is aliasing reduction: at 44kHz and 22kHz sample rates the improvement reaches up to 12dB, and at 88kHz or 176kHz that figure climbs to 20dB. In practice this means FM-derived tones — already one of Nemesis's strengths — come back cleaner from high-frequency content, which matters if you are pushing metallic plucks or bright supersaw-style leads into a DnB mix that has already been compressed hard at the master.

FM and NeoFM synthesis sit at the core of a lot of underground electronic sound design. The wiry, inharmonic character of frequency modulation is behind countless DnB stabs, dubstep growl textures and the kind of digital-cold leads that cut through a dense low-end. Aliasing at any of those moments — particularly on transient attacks — erodes the clarity that makes those sounds work. Less aliasing means tighter transients and a cleaner high shelf when you go to EQ the sound into the mix.

NeoFM: What Makes Nemesis Different

Nemesis does not simply replicate classic phase-modulation FM in the Yamaha DX tradition. Tone2's NeoFM approach combines true FM with phase modulation and a range of additional digital synthesis types — waveshaping, additive, phase distortion, ring modulation and more — under a single interface. The engine also brings automatic micro-tuning that analyses the notes being played and adjusts tuning in real time to keep chords from muddying. Version 3.1 improves this further: chords using the 'Fat 1' or 'Very Clean' micro-tuning modes now track better, which directly benefits any layered pad or chord stab work.

The other substantial change in 3.1 is the reverb section. All seven of Nemesis's built-in reverb processors — Ultra, Big, Infinity, Plate, Trance, Glass and Large — have been reworked. Each now has a smoother rolloff, less phasing artefacts, more detail in the tail and greater perceived depth. For a synth that producers often use in a 'one plugin, finished sound' way, this reduces the need to add an external reverb just to smooth out the internal tail.

Practical Notes for Existing Users

The update is free for anyone who already owns Nemesis 3. Tone2 sent download links by email; if yours did not arrive, check your spam folder. Nemesis 3.1 is fully backwards compatible — existing projects and patches load without any extra steps and will immediately reflect the improved engine. Owners of Nemesis 1 or 2 can upgrade to v3.x at a discounted rate of $39/€39. New licenses are priced at $99/€99. The plugin runs as VST2, VST3 and AU on both Windows and macOS, with native Apple Silicon support.

► Key changes in v3.1 at a glance

Aliasing Reduction at 44/22kHz

Up to 12dB of aliasing reduction at standard sample rates, meaning FM leads and plucks return cleaner transients and less digital grit in the upper frequency range.

Aliasing Reduction at 88/176kHz

Up to 20dB of aliasing reduction at higher sample rates, which benefits any producer running sessions at 88kHz or above for added headroom and fidelity.

Improved Micro-Tuning

Chords using the 'Fat 1' and 'Very Clean' micro-tuning modes now sound more cohesive and better defined, improving layered pads and chord stabs in the mix.

Reworked Reverb Processors

All seven built-in reverb types — including Ultra, Infinity and Plate — have been updated with smoother rolloffs, reduced phasing and more tail depth across the board.

Free for Nemesis 3 Owners

The update is free for all existing Nemesis 3 owners, with full backwards compatibility — existing projects load without any extra steps and immediately benefit.

Windows & Mac / Apple Silicon

Available as VST2, VST3 and AU with native Apple Silicon support. Runs on Windows 10/11 and macOS 10.7 or higher, including macOS 14 on M1 and M2 machines.
