Moog dropped the Bob Moog Tribute Edition Minimoog Model D on 14 April 2026. Only 500 units exist. Each one is hand-assembled at Moog's North Carolina facility, and once they're gone, they're gone.

On the surface this looks like another reissue — and in terms of the circuit, it is. The Tribute Edition shares its entire signal path with Moog's 2022 Model D reissue: three voltage-controlled oscillators, the legendary 24 dB/octave ladder lowpass filter, dual contour generators, and a discrete analog mixer. What has changed is everything you can see and touch. The cabinet is cut from quartersawn white oak — a wood chosen for its grain stability and distinctive tiger-stripe figuring — replacing the Appalachian cherry of the previous run. A custom photo-anodised badge on the rear panel references the panel graphics of Moog's earliest modular systems, the System 55, System 35 and Model 10.

Why This Matters to Electronic Producers

The Model D's ladder filter is the reference point for a reason. Its 24 dB/octave slope, the way the resonance interacts with the cutoff, the slight warmth introduced by the discrete transistor ladder — these characteristics have shaped the bass design of electronic music for over five decades. In drum and bass and UK dubstep contexts, the Model D is most useful as a source of fat monosynth basslines, reese-adjacent tones, and subby leads that sit in the low-mids with weight that softsynth emulations often chase but rarely match under compression and saturation.

The modern functional updates introduced in the 2022 reissue carry over in full. That means MIDI in and out, a dedicated analog LFO with triangle and square waveshapes, a Fatar keybed with velocity and aftertouch accessible via CV jacks on the rear panel, and the mixer feedback modification hard-wired — the knob that lets the Model D overdrive and saturate its own signal path without any external processing. For producers routing the output into a chain of saturators and parallel compression, that internal feedback circuit is a fast way to add harmonic density before a single plugin touches the signal.

DAW integration is straightforward. MIDI over USB means you can sequence the Model D directly from Ableton, FL Studio or any other host, and the CV and Gate outputs open it up to modular setups for those running Eurorack alongside their DAW. Pitch wheel is spring-loaded with a centre detent — small detail, but useful for precise pitch modulation without drift when you release.

The Collector Angle

At $3,999, this is not an impulse purchase. The sonic character is identical to the standard reissue, which trades at a lower price on the used market. What you are paying for is the limited production number, the oak cabinet, and the connection to Bob Moog's legacy — plus the fact that $500 from every unit sold goes directly to the Bob Moog Foundation, supporting the Moogseum and Dr. Bob's Sound School. For studios that use the Model D as a workhorse instrument, the standard reissue makes more financial sense. For producers who want a historically significant piece of hardware that will hold its identity on the shelf and in the mix, the Tribute Edition makes a different kind of argument.
