#019 - Reverse a Sample to Find the Perfect Build-Up FX

Build-up FX (the swelling sounds before drops, the risers, the air-tightening effects) are normally treated as a separate category from the rest of your samples. They don't have to be. Any sample with a noticeable decay tail - vocal phrases, snare hits with reverb, crashing cymbals, atmospheric textures - becomes a build-up FX when reversed. The decay tail becomes a build-up, and the final transient becomes the punctuation that drops you into the next section.

The technique

  1. Choose a sample with a clear decay tail - a snare with reverb, a vocal phrase, a cymbal crash, a pad swell
  2. Drop it into your DAW as audio
  3. Reverse the sample - most DAWs do this with one click (Ableton: clip "Rev" button; Logic: Functions → Reverse; FL: sample properties → reverse)
  4. Time the reversed sample so its end-point (originally the start of the sample) lands exactly on beat 1 of your drop
  5. Add a low-pass filter sweep over the reversed sample if you want extra movement
  6. Optionally layer a second reversed sample at a different pitch for thickness
Reversed reverb tails work particularly well because reverb naturally has a long, smooth decay that becomes a long, smooth swell when reversed. A reversed snare with reverb is a textbook build-up FX - many sample pack risers are exactly this.

This technique opens up your entire sample library as potential build-up source material. The vocal phrase from your sample pack becomes a unique riser nobody else has. The cymbal crash becomes an unusual build into your drop. The pad swell becomes an unconventional pre-drop wash. Every sample with a tail is now a build-up FX.
