#018 - Use 1/16 Dotted Delay for Stereo Movement Without Width Plugins

Stereo enhancers and width plugins frequently introduce phase issues. A tempo-synced 1/16 dotted delay creates stereo movement organically - by panning the delayed signal opposite to the dry - without any phase manipulation. The result is rhythmic stereo movement that feels natural, locks to the grid, and translates perfectly to mono (it just sounds like a rhythmic delay instead of stereo movement, but it doesn't fall apart).

Tempo-synced delay plugin set to 1/16 dotted (3/32) with feedback at 35% and ping-pong stereo mode enabled

The technique

  1. On a synth, lead, vocal or atmospheric channel, insert a tempo-synced delay (most DAW stock delays will do)
  2. Set the delay time to 1/16 dotted (3/32 note)
  3. Set feedback to 30-40% for a few audible repeats
  4. Set the wet signal to be panned opposite to the dry signal - dry centre, wet panned hard left or right (or use a ping-pong delay mode if your plugin offers it)
  5. Blend the wet at -10 to -6 dB under the dry
  6. High-pass the delay return at 200-400 Hz to keep low-end clear

The 1/16 dotted (sometimes written 3/32) creates a rhythmic relationship that interlocks with 16th-note hi-hats without doubling them - every third 16th gets a delay accent, which creates polyrhythmic interest. This is the delay value that defines a huge amount of UK dubstep, modern jungle, and atmospheric DnB lead work.

Try the same trick with 1/8 dotted (3/16) for a slower, more spacious version - particularly effective on vocals and atmospheric pads where you want the delay to feel like an environment rather than a rhythmic accent.
