#011 - The 30-90-30 Rule for DnB Breakdown Arrangement

#011 - The 30-90-30 Rule for DnB Breakdown Arrangement

Breakdowns that feel either too short (no emotional space) or too long (energy dies) usually fail because the producer eyeballed the bar count instead of structuring around how listeners actually experience time. The 30-90-30 rule provides a tested template: 30 seconds of decay, 90 seconds of emotional content, 30 seconds of build. The total breakdown lands around 2:30, which matches the natural arc of attention on a dance floor and in headphone listening alike.

DnB track arrangement view showing a breakdown structured in three sections - 16 bars decay, 56 bars content, 16 bars build

The structure

  1. 30 seconds of decay: Bars 1-16 at 174 BPM. Strip the elements that defined the previous drop. Reverb tails carry through, drums thin, energy reduces deliberately.
  2. 90 seconds of emotional content: Bars 17-72. The melodic core of the breakdown - pad progressions, vocal phrases, atmospheric development. This is where the track's emotional argument is made.
  3. 30 seconds of build: Bars 73-88. Risers, returning drums, automation sweeps, bass returning. The next drop is loaded into place.
At 174 BPM, one bar is roughly 1.4 seconds. 30 seconds is approximately 21 bars; 90 seconds is approximately 64 bars; 30 seconds is approximately 21 bars. Total: 106 bars, or just over 2:30 of breakdown - the canonical "long breakdown" length used by Hospital, RAM, Shogun and similar label releases.

This isn't a rigid template - short tracks have shorter breakdowns, deep liquid tracks can extend the emotional middle, jump-up productions often skip the middle entirely. But for atmospheric DnB, halftime DnB and most modern liquid, the 30-90-30 structure consistently delivers breakdowns that feel complete rather than rushed or bloated.
