#009 - Parallel Saturation on Your Drum Bus for Weight Without Loudness
Adding saturation directly to a drum bus crushes the transient and reduces the peak-to-loudness ratio, which sounds aggressive but flattens the dynamics that make drums hit. Running saturation in parallel - blending a saturated copy underneath the dry drum bus - adds harmonic weight and density without compromising the transient impact. The drums hit hard and sound full, instead of hitting flat and sounding loud.
The technique
- Create a return/aux track called "Drum Saturation"
- Send your drum bus to it pre-fader at -6 to -3 dB
- On the return, insert a saturator (Saturn 2, Decapitator, Softube Saturation Knob, Fruity Soft Clipper)
- Push the drive aggressively - 30-50% drive, somewhere where it would sound obvious if printed directly
- Optionally follow with a high-pass at 100 Hz to keep low-end controlled
- Blend the return underneath the dry drum bus at -12 to -18 dB, just enough to feel the weight without obviously hearing the saturation
The result is drums that feel weightier and denser without the perceived loss of transient that direct saturation creates. Particularly valuable in DnB where every 1 dB of perceived weight on the drum kit matters and aggressive limiting on the master can flatten directly-saturated drums into pancakes.
The same trick works for parallel compression on drums - the principle is identical: heavy processing on a parallel return blended underneath preserves the dry transient while adding the processed character.
