What is the Think Break?
The Think Break comes from the track "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins, released in 1972.
The breaks appear in multiple parts of the track, where drummer John "Jabo" Starks plays a funky 4-bar drum solos that became one of the most sampled breaks in music history - such as 1:21 in the video linked above.
The syncopated, laid-back rhythm has found its way into genres like hip-hop, jungle, and, most notably, Drum & Bass.
In the world of Drum & Bass, the Think Break is favoured for its smooth, rolling pattern.
Producers across sub-genres, particularly in Liquid Drum & Bass, have gravitated toward this break because of its ability to fit seamlessly into deep, atmospheric tracks.
Its natural swing makes it perfect for creating that fluid, driving rhythm that Liquid DnB is known for.
Why the Think Break Still Matters
As Drum & Bass evolves, the classics like the Think Break remain relevant.
The simple yet effective groove is still unmatched for creating that signature rolling DnB sound.
Producers today continue to draw on its rhythmic complexity and flexibility, using it in creative ways to fit modern production styles.
In genres like Liquid Drum & Bass, where the focus is on atmosphere, melody, and smooth transitions, the Think Break is a go-to tool.
Its laid-back vibe contrasts perfectly with deep basslines and lush chord progressions, creating a sense of movement and groove without overpowering the mix.
