DNB and UK Dubstep Music Production Tips

Static oscillator detune creates static chorusing. Modulating the detune amount with a slow LFO creates micro-variations that the brain reads as organic - synths feel breathed rather than computed.

Automating bus faders affects bus processing. VCA-style group faders let you automate section volume after bus processing - drops, breakdowns and builds change cleanly without disturbing the compressors.

Build-up FX don't need to be a separate sample category. Any sample with a decay tail becomes a riser when reversed - the tail becomes the build, the transient becomes the drop.

Stereo wideners introduce phase issues. A 1/16 dotted delay with the wet panned opposite to dry creates stereo movement organically - and translates perfectly to mono.

Mono-ing the entire sub channel throws away usable stereo content above 120 Hz. Mid/side EQ high-pass on the side channel only mono's the low frequencies - clean low end without sacrificing stereo character.

The instinct might be to avoid the stretch by working at the break's source tempo and stretching everything at the end. Don't: that just smears the artifacts across your whole mix.

Bus chains with 6-12 plugins eat CPU and keep decisions endlessly tweakable. Resampling to audio commits the sound and frees the CPU - and the mental clarity moves the arrangement forward.

Reverb that triggers instantly smears vocal consonants. 20-40 ms of pre-delay keeps words articulate while the reverb still provides space - and the gap itself reads as depth.

Wavetable synths accept any audio file as source. Drag a chord stab sample into Serum or Vital and you've got a fully-playable patch built from real recorded harmonic content.
